A Fort Worth family that lost their home to a fire Friday evening is celebrating a reunion with their 5-year-old dog who survived the blaze.
Ron described Ruby as “some kind of chihuahua mix.” She is known to family and friends as Gentry’s dog — she doesn’t really let anyone else touch her. Gentry inherited Ruby from her mother, who died about four months ago. The dogs became like her children after her daughter and two sons moved out of the home.
They learned two of their dogs, Lolly and Piper, got to the backyard of the house through the dog door. Lolly found her way to a neighbor’s house by digging a hole under the fence, and Piper also escaped the yard and was later found by a different neighbor.“They literally told me the fire department said there’s no way she’s alive,” she recalled. “They said I should prepare myself because there was no way she was alive in there.
“I’m thinking if this dog is in the pool, I’m going to find her. Dead or alive, I’m going to find this dog. I called her and called her and she did not come,” Holsteen said. “She kind of snapped and growled at the restoration guy, but I dug her up out of there and ran out of there with her in my arms,” Holsteen said.A veterinarian gave Ruby a clean bill of health; no burns, no scratches and no smoke injuries, though she definitely needed a shower.Janice Holsteen holds Ruby in her arms shortly after the dog was found alive following a house fire Friday evening.
