Montgomery, Alabama
Dozens of young people brought their fishing poles to the Montgomery County pond Saturday morning to try their luck at catching a big one. The annual Fishing Rodeo is hosted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Foundation, and it’s a great way to get children out into nature. Hundreds of kids ages 16 and under were allowed to catch up to six fish, and there were plenty swimming around.
Sheriff Derrick Cunningham says the pond was stocked with around 1,700 pounds of catfish. The event was free, and this year the football team from Alabama Christian Academy helped people bait their hooks, showed them how to cast a line in, and also removed the fish from the hook once they’d been caught.
“Hopefully this is a life-changing skill. This is something that they need to know. There are a lot of kids who focus on video games, there are a lot that we see playing sports. Being able to come out here and to not only just catch fish, but also take them home and eat fish, that matters. It lets kids know that this is a game changer. This is something that you always need to know how to do – to be able to live off of the land,” said Sheriff Cunningham.
