Researhcesr from EPFL and SIMIT have managed to develop a new lithium tantalate chip that could reduce costs and improve performance of PICs.
Researchers from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology have created a new kind of revolutionary photonic integrated circuits . This new chip, made from lithium tantalate, promises enhanced performance, cost-effectiveness, and broader application potential.
These chips have since found a welcome home driving information traffic through millions of glass fibers in modern data centers. To date, the lithium niobate-on-insulator wafer has been the PIC of choice.Owing to its strong Pockels coefficient, it has proved to be a highly efficient material for photonic integrated electro-optical modulators, which is crucial for high-speed optical modulation.
But, the researchers may have found a cheaper alternative, lithium tantalate. This material has excellent electro-optic properties similar to lithium niobate, but it offers advantages in terms of scalability and cost. This is especially true since the telecom industry already widely uses it in 5G radiofrequency filters.the material’s inherent advantages and can revolutionize the field by making high-quality PICs more cost-effective.
These techniques were initially developed for lithium niobate and then adjusted for the harder and more inert lithium tantalate. During this adaptation process, the etch parameters were optimized to reduce optical losses, which is a critical factor in obtaining high performance in photonic circuits.
