An investigation has revealed a startling increase in the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in SA, raising concerns among senior firefighters and prompting the state government to issue a warning.
"It's a really significant increase and we don't want to see that trend continue," Metropolitan Fire Services Chief Officer Jeff Swann said. "They certainly do have the potential to explode but the most common thing we are seeing is thermal run-away where they just start off as a small fire, it self generates and continues to burn at a higher temperature."
In response to these escalating incidents, the MFS has intensified training efforts and is developing new technologies and techniques to combat lithium-ion battery fires effectively.
