LISTEN: The Woman King - Lukewarm at best but still worth a gander
In the 1800s, a group of all-women warriors protects the African kingdom of Dahomey with skills and fierceness, unlike anything the world has ever seen. Faced with a new threat, the fearless leader of this unit, Nanisca, trains the next generation of recruits to fight against a foreign enemy that's determined to destroy their way of life.
The first thing you notice is the intensity brought to each role by every actor. From Viola Davis in the lead to local stunt woman Sne Mbatha as one of the more feared warriors in this unit of soldiers. It also boasts all the finishings of a big-budget offering. It perhaps plays on similar tropes to Marvel’s Black Panther, loads of melanin on the screen and a story set in Africa. But, who can complain about that even though some of the accents are a tad forced? But, hey, you get used to the irritancy as time goes by.
South Africa really gets to shine in this with cameos by actor and comedian Sivuyile Ngesi, former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi as well as Seputla Sebogodi - best known for his role as Kenneth Mashaba before the reboot of Generations - also has a small appearance.
