She found a new life after the 1980 Olympic boycott. Now, Rainsberger is supporting her daughter Katie following the cancellation of the NCAA season.
Lisa Rainsberger was in the pool when she heard the United States would be boycotting the 1980 Olympic Games. At the time, she was a freshman on the University of Michigan’s swim team, competing against Russians at an international meet in Austin, Texas.in Moscow—after the Soviet Union failed to comply with Carter’s deadline to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan—she was focusing on the Olympic Trials to make Team USA.
“I’m literally in the pool with them, but I can’t be in the pool with them because we boycotted, and it made no sense to me,” Rainsberger recalled in an interview with. “I’m barely old enough to vote and I’m finding that [Carter] has totally changed the trajectory of my life.”and the Olympics was always the ultimate goal for a majority of her life. With the boycott, Lisa decided she needed an escape.
“There’s no way in God’s creation I’m going to go swim my butt off all summer and watch everyone else go to the Olympics,” she said. “I wanted to quarantine myself in an environment away from the news media.”She signed up for a geology camp in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where for eight weeks she lived in a cabin with no electricity and learned about geological formations in classrooms along the Snake River. There was no swimming pool.
