On June 4, Banes was hit by a person driving a scooter in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed to. The driver was traveling north on Amsterdam Ave. and ran a red light. The scooter struck Banes as she was crossing Amsterdam Ave. near Lincoln Center with the pedestrian signal in her favor. She was transported to Mount Sinai Saint Luke’s Hospital in critical condition, suffering a traumatic brain injury.
The driver fled the location, continuing northbound, an NYPD spokesperson said. No arrests have been made in connection to the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing. Since the 1980s, Banes performed in various films, TV shows and stage plays. She starred as Marybeth Elliott, the mother of Rosamund Pike’s character Amy Ellioty and the mother-in-law of Ben Affleck’s Nick Dunne, in David Fincher’s 2014 film “Gone Girl.” The film picked up four Golden Globe nominations, including best director for Fincher, and an Academy Award nomination for Pike for best actress.
Banes was also featured in Gore Verbinski’s “A Cure for Wellness” in 2016, “Legally Blondes,” “Brothel,” “Freedom Writers,” “Combustion” and “Dragonfly,” among others. On TV, Banes appeared in “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill,” “Son of the Beach,” “The King of Queens,” “Six Feet Under,” “One Life to Live,” “Nashville,” “Royal Pains” and many more.
