Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown made an insane deal with his teammate, Jahmyr Gibbs.
It was a bit of a surprise when the Detroit Lions selected running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.Even Gibbs, himself, was shocked on the day of the draft.'It was pretty shocking to me,' Gibbs said last April.
'I didn't know I would get picked as high as I did because running backs don't get picked as high in this new age and new era of the NFL draft.'Even more surprisingly, Gibbs was drafted to a team that had just spent $18 million to sign running back David Montgomery to a three-year deal. Moreover, D'Andre Swift was still in the Lions' running back room at the time of the trade.Things quickly worked themselves out, though.More news: New Star Lions Defender Unsure If He'll Be Ready for Week 1Swift was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles on the third and final day of the draft, and suddenly, the backfield was much less crowded. Then, once the season got underway, Gibbs and Montgomery proved that they could not only survive together in the same backfield, but thrive.Montgomery, the starter, got 219 rushes for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns, to go along with 16 catches for 117 yards.Gibbs started three games in Montgomery's absence and overall had 182 rushes for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, to go along with 52 receptions for 316 yards and a receiving touchdown.Gibbs and Montgomery became arguably the best backfield duo in the entire league, and this year, they're expected to be just as dominant. While Gibbs and Montgomery will continue splitting time this year, Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has given a challenge to the team's sophomore back.Gibbs told ESPN's Eric Woodyard that St. Brown challenged him to get 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards this season. If Gibbs accomplishes the feat, St. Brown will buy him anything he wants.Gibbs is up for the challenge.'I'm gonna break his bank,' Gibbs said to Woodyard, and added he 'might get a house.'As Woodyard points out, just three players in NFL history have had 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season — Christian McCaffrey, Marshall Faulk, and Roger Craig. Gibbs told Woodyard he would 'like to be in that category.'It would be impressive for any running back to reach this feat, but it would be even more impressive to do it in a shared backfield. However, Gibbs proved in 2023 that he's capable of having an explosive season, so maybe he'll be able to make a bigger impact in the passing game while continuing his dominance as a runner in 2024.More news: Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Offers Update on CeeDee Lamb Contract Holdout
