Lower Paxton and PennDOT officials announced plans to attempt to protect the roundabout from further damage.
Inspecting the truck-damaged curb at the Linglestown /Mountain Road roundabout are Township Public Safety Director Adam Kosheba, Supervisor Yuhanna “John” Njeim and PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.
At a Thursday press conference, Lower Paxton and PennDOT officials announced a series of steps they said will be implemented before the end of the year at the roundabout at Linglestown/Route 39 and Mountain Roads. The main issue at the site has been big rigs that decimate the curbing. The township and PennDOT officials are looking at new signage and a truck restriction study to determine if length limits for commercial vehicles should be shortened. All restriction signage will be evaluated to ensure PennDOT is providing a clear message and strategic location. They will also evaluate updating text-based signs to a standard pictorial version. PennDOT currently restricts bigger trucks from using Route 39 , generally from Parkway West to Manor Drive. Currently, trucks with two trailers that are more than 8.5 feet wide and trailers that are 28.5 feet long and more than 8.5 feet wide are not permitted.Lower Paxton Township supervisors Laura Kurtz, Allen McCormack Jr., Yuhanna “John” Njeim, Pamela Thompson and Jill Vecchio, along with Lower Paxton Township public safety director Adam Kosheba and PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler, were at the press conference. The road draws truck traffic because it is a state route. North Mountain Road also connects to Route 81. Signs alerting large tractor-trailers to turn around are now posted along eastbound Route 39 , 3 miles from the roundabout and then a mile out. For westbound traffic, there is a warning sign in the 2700 block of Linglestown. The roundabout was one of the first in Pennsylvania and was put in place after dangerous high-speed crashes became a concern at the former four-way stop.Pa.
