The discarded garments and possessions beside the Rio Grande gave hints to the stories of...
So did Juan Miguel.
In the cool air along this stretch of muddy road walled in with thickets of Carrizo cane, the migrants shed their wet clothes and past lives. The garments and possessions covered the ground and clung to branches Wednesday as far as I could see. Each item told a story.A child’s life vest. An X-ray from a medical record. Bras. Underwear. A kid’s Super Mario sweatshirt. A pair of jeans with a leather belt. Red Crocs sandals. White slides. Kid shoes. Adult shoes. Hiking boots. Phone chargers.
The official name is the Del Rio Sector Southside Processing Facility, but most know it by its nickname, “Fire Fly,” because of its proximity to Fire Fly Lane. During a visit Wednesday to Fire Fly, long lines of asylum seekers wove through the different stations — possession search, records check, paper bracelet, snack, shower, medical evaluation, immigration interview and eventually a large holding room while awaiting a bus to their next stop, most likely a nearby nongovernment organization.
With Title 42 slated to end Wednesday, it’s expected the facility could see between 3,000 to 5,000 migrants a day. Title 42 is a Trump-era policy enacted during the COVID pandemic that allowed authorities to quickly deny asylum-seekers for public health reasons.
