Watching the frenzied final days of the 20-year war that had defined his career was tough for the 35-year-old Fresno, Calif., native and 2009 Air Force Academy graduate. He’d joined the military during a time of war and flown countless missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.As he watched from Alabama, many of his friends and colleagues were supporting the United States’ largest-ever noncombatant evacuation operation. He felt as if he were watching the big game from the sideline.
In this first draft of history, Brewer wanted to “make sure the stories didn’t get lost” and add to the larger understanding of the operation. He wove a narrative from their stories, news reports and operational info. The result is a harrowing account of people succeeding despite harsh conditions. The photos from those days live in our collective memory. Afghans running alongside a C-17. Lines of refugees waiting to board a plane. Surging crowds. Afghan parents handing their babies to Marines on the other side of the fence. Flag-draped transfer cases of dead Americans.
