Lincolnwood trustees have offered very preliminary support for allowing Hebrew Theological College to build a women’s college and dormitory on the former Whistler’s Restaurant property.
The project would require amending the village’s B-2 zoning district, which calls for general business development, to allow a college or university as a special use. The Lincolnwood Village Board welcomed the idea on Aug. 15, but requested developers follow very specific parameters to avoid opening the entire B-2 district to other such uses.
Patel said the project would be a positive addition to Lincolnwood and the neighborhood surrounding the long-vacant restaurant, as long as the village can reach an agreement on the special use. The facility would provide 32 on-site parking spaces, utilize 15 existing on-street or new parkway spaces, and provide off-site improvements such as new parking on Trumbull and an improved alley, Hammel said.
Trustee Atour Toma Sargon said she would support a text amendment as long as it doesn’t open up the rest of the B-2 district to such developments.Trustee Jean Ikezoe-Halevi expressed concern that opening a college would effectively remove the site from property tax rolls, but she suggested sending the proposal to the Plan Commission for review.
