Little villages and the swinging scene have one thing in common – a rock solid sense of community

Some of my best and most meaningful friendships were forged from seeing each other naked the first time we met

Much has been made of the fact that this small, pretty, very rural village just down the road from where Margaret Thatcher was born is an odd choice of location for a thousands swingers to congregate and copulate, withdeclaring it “the swinging capital of Britain”. But in my experience it’s actually the perfect place for it, because little villages and the swinging scene have one thing in common: a rock solid sense of community.

In short, it was very much like living in a small town where everyone knows each other, and while it had its downsides, it was the most connected I’ve ever felt to a group of friends. We were introduced to each other via a slightly seedy underworld but we ended up sticking together because we really got on.

It would be easy to assume that the post-Covid swinging boom was just about craving variety and adventure after such a boring, claustrophobic periods in our lives. But, once again, I think it’s about much more than that – it’s about a longing for connection and community. Just like when I moved to London and needed some mates, after the pandemic we’d all had two years without making new friends or meeting new people. Of course we found ourselves craving new social contact.
