The possible off-road-focused luxury SUV from Lincoln could arrive before the end of the decade to compete against the Lexus GX, Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz's icon.

Lincoln has never played in the luxury off-road space before, but a report published yesterday suggests that could be changing. Road Track's Hearst Autos siblings at Autoweek spoke to unnamed “sources” for this news, with one source suggesting there will be a two-row Lincoln that rides on the Ford Bronco ’s platform in the 2029-2030 range.

Another source reportedly drew comparisons to the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen—a heady target for Lincoln to chase after. That’s all we have when it comes to specific information from Autoweek’s report, leaving the rest up to our imagination. The Bronco’s platform, codenamed T6, is currently shared with the Ranger pickup. It’s not exactly a shining example of luxury and refinement when it comes to ride quality and driving experience, so there would surely need to be changes made to bring it in line with what the typical Lincoln buyer expects. There’s precedence for luxury SUV buyers angling for a rough-and-tumble vibe, though. Look at the Lexus GX as the most successful example on sale today. If Lincoln were to bring a Bronco-based SUV to production, copying what makes the GX so popular would be a safe aim. The Lexus is a lot closer in price to where we’d expect a luxurious Bronco to land, too; if Lincoln aims at competition like the G-Wagen or Range Rover, it could quickly become a non-starter in price alone. After all, folks who can afford a G-Wagen or Range Rover are likely just going to buy one of those as opposed to a Bronco-based Lincoln. We’re still years out from when the report suggests this Lincoln could become reality, so take everything with a grain of salt. And even if this turns out to be nothing more than rumors, now’s a good time to let Lincoln know if you’d want to buy such a vehicle. The Nautilus would be the likely sacrifice if this idea comes to life, being the only other two-row SUV in Lincoln’s lineup. We can’t say it would be mourned for too long.
