Lin-Manuel Miranda argues most New Yorkers have an answer to the following question: When did you first see “The Warriors”? The 1979 cult classic about gangs in New York is the inspiration for a new musical concept album from Miranda and actor and playwriter Eisa Davis. The project out Oct.

Eisa Davis appears at The 2016 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway on May 1, 2016, in New York , left, and Lin-Manuel Miranda appears at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington on Dec. 3, 2023. Eisa Davis appears at The 2016 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway on May 1, 2016, in New York , left, and Lin-Manuel Miranda appears at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington on Dec. 3, 2023.

This isn’t a one-to-one retelling, and it certainly isn’t a simple gender-swapping. “My sense of New York that I think really comes out in this album and is sparked in the film of ‘The Warriors,’ is this real dream of unity and peace,” says Davis. “And so that was something I really felt that we could lean into.”It was a movie that lived kind of in my brain before I was even really forming memory. And then a college classmate sent me an email in 2009 aftercame out.

The other thing that was really exciting about it was getting to explore writing a score by being in a studio with talented musicians and working with a producer.writers work in a really specific way where we sit alone in a room, and then we try it on actors, and we get it back again and we try again. And I wanted to jam with musicians.I also feel like it has to do with our aesthetics of being closer to pop — like having this hybrid of pop and musical theater. ...

And of course, the way that we split it up is that there’s both this rush toward home, but then there’s also still a possibility . And so going back to this dream of peace is so crucial.
