A new 12-disc Blu-ray collection brings together ten Star Trek films, including director's cuts of classic films like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Star Trek enthusiasts have recently been treated to a wave of new Blu-ray releases, and this trend continues with a comprehensive 10-movie, 12-disc Blu-ray / Digital Copy collection. This expansive set encompasses all six films from the Original Series and four movies from the Next Generation, as well as a special 2022 Director’s Edition of Star Trek : The Motion Picture (1979).
Notably, this collection also includes the 2022 Director’s Edition of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), a film whose theatrical release was marred by incompleteness. Distribution hurdles beyond director Robert Wise's control forced him to curtail post-production, leaving many aspects of the movie aesthetically unfinished. \In 2001, Paramount collaborated with Wise to produce a complete Director’s Edition release. However, due to limitations in Blu-ray technology at the time, this version never received a Blu-ray conversion, and the Director’s Edition was again lost. David Fein, a close friend of Wise and a producer involved in the original 2001 Director’s Edition release, shared his firsthand account of these events with Comicbook in 2022. Fein recounted Wise’s sentiment before his passing: ‘I need you to promise me that, no matter what, you will always work to make sure that lives on and that we eventually get our negative because my legacy can’t be back to the theatrical again. It has to be the film the way that it needed to be, not the theatrical.
