men that are openly gay are frequently seen as an unwelcome anomaly. After coming out in 2017, rapper iLoveMakonnen was supported online. Soon after in an interview withthe credibility of his music that was initially about trapping and selling drugs, suggesting that being gay didn’t equate to iLoveMakonnen’s lyrical content. Lil Boosie has shared homophobic and transphobic thoughts on social media often; in one instance going after.
DaBaby appears to not be on board. He, in turn, is spreading long-debunked theories about gay people. In fact, the most surprising thing about his comments were that they felt resurrected from decades ago. Extremely out of touch with reality. The issue here — besides my deep concern about the school system by which DaBaby was taught— is that DaBaby spewing homophobic, misogynistic, and stigma-laden language in an attempt to thicken a wall between “the gay” and his fragile masculinity is violent. Three decades ago when the world was contending with the fact that gay people exist, have rights, and were disproportionately being affected by HIV/AIDS, the things that DaBaby saidwould have been cringe-worthy. But now, it’s embarrassing.
Ultimately, DaBaby is going to have to take this loss. His team may eventually release a statement, he may go away for a while, and likely issue an apology as endorsement deals are lost. He’s been “cancelled.” And although cancellation rarely results in full extraction from popular culture, DaBaby did cement one thing for me: Everything he stands for is a reminder that we’ve not come that far as a society and we have so much further to go.
