CLEVELAND, Ohio — For months, robbery after robbery unfolded in much the same way: gun-wielding thieves, driving in stolen cars and wearing masks, would block drivers, rob them and bolt before the victims knew what had happened, investigators say.

The grand jury also slapped two others – Andre Lovett and Ronald Gonzalez – with charges, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, tied to five more stick-ups that the group carried out. “It’s not surprising to me, given the level of violence that we’ve seen from them, that they’re now tied to several murders,” O’Malley said.Analysts with the prosecutor’s office’s crime strategies unit first noticed several robberies across Cuyahoga County in September 2022 in which victims described being robbed by assailants in a silver or gray Honda. The car drove up to them and blocked their vehicles from moving.

Surveillance videos recorded the man as he tried to run away, but one of the assailants chased him down and brought him back to the others. The group pistol-whipped him, forced him to remove his pants and shoes and then stole his car. As the man ran off, the group began firing at him, nearly hitting him in the back.

Three men, with guns and ski masks, forced him to transfer money to them using CashApp. They then stole his phone and the rental car he was in, which had a child’s car seat in the back, according to investigators. The officers waited until the car pulled up to the window and was stopped before blocking it. The driver tried to get out, but he couldn’t open the door far enough because the car was too close to the building.

While crime analysts and detectives poured through the cellphone data during the day, police officers spent the nights searching for other suspects. Among the items found in the trash can was a diamond wedding ring taken during a home invasion on Brookside Avenue, prosecutors said. Meanwhile, Cleveland police detectives attempted to track down a teen accused in some of the robberies. They were watching a house when they saw the teens walking outside and getting into a car. The detectives tailed them at a distance when the car pulled up next to a man walking along the street on his way to his barbecue restaurant. The teens ran up to the man and robbed him at gunpoint, then got back into the car as the undercover gang car pulled up to the scene. The teens sped off.
