A severed artery in her right index finger left Alyssa Healy fearing for her career after a fight between her dogs
A severed artery in her right index finger left Alyssa Healy briefly fearing for her career after she intervened to stop her two dogs fighting on Saturday night,But after surgery on Sunday morning confirmed no bone or tendon damage, Healy is now hopeful of returning to play this season, possibly as soon as the back end of this season’s WBBL for the Sydney Sixers, with a tour of India to follow in mid-December.
Misty and Millie, the two Staffordshire terriers Healy shares with her husband Mitchell Starc, were initially jousting playfully at home on Saturday evening, before an escalation compelled Australia’s acting captain to intervene. “It was quite gory,” Healy said on Monday. “I’ve got two puppy dogs that were having a bit of a rough and tumble. It got a little bit more than that, and unfortunately I got my hand in the wrong place at the wrong time. My right index finger took a bit of a battering. I ended up in the emergency room and had some surgery yesterday morning to make sure it’s all good to go.“The positive sign out of it was there was no bone or tendon damage or rupture, so that’s the best news possible.
“I won’t lie, when I pulled my finger out initially, I thought I was in strife, but I think it’s all gone seemingly smoothly. I’d say shorter term rather than longer term. I think it’s all going to come down to function and whether I can continue to grip the bat the way I need to or catch the ball.”
