The torpedo used for exercises has no “no propulsion system or explosives” a Navy official said.
U.S. Navy and Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb experts were off the coast of Dana Point Monday afternoon recovering a lightweight exercise torpedo found by a boater.
Sgt. Scott Steinle, a spokesperson for OCSD, said the department’s Harbor Patrol heard a broadcast around 1:30 p.m. from the Los Angeles County Sheriff about the torpedo being spotted. Sheehan said he stayed in the area to alert other boaters and waited for law enforcement to respond. When time passed and no one came out, he said he called the Coast Guard, asking if they had been made aware of the situation. They told him they had coordinated with the Navy on the planned recovery, he said.
