Lights Out | Diesel generator fumes threaten our health

With load shedding confirmed for two years, businesses and households are looking at ways to keep the lights on, and diesel generators seem to be the most popular choice.

The man had to shout because he had to talk over the noisy generator that keeps his business open during rolling blackouts. “The increase in generators will definitely have an effect on air quality and air pollution levels,” said Dr Raeesa Moolla, senior lecturer in meteorology, air quality and environmental health at Wits University.

The compounds Moolla specifically looks at are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene , which have carcinogenic effects. These chemicals can cause anything from minor headaches and sinus infections to much more dangerous health conditions such as cancer. She explained that diesel fumes are teratogenic: when a pregnant individual is exposed to them, they can cause foetal abnormalities.
