The hype machine might explode Sunday as Victor Wembanyama plays his first NBA game in Los Angeles against the Clippers
LOS ANGELES — Victor Wembanyama arrived at the Frost Bank Center for his NBA debut ready for his close-up. Decked in black pants with a black jacket over a black shirt and wearing dark sunglasses indoors, the Spurs’ rookie big man showed up for his first day of work Wednesday looking a little like Le Terminator. The eyes of the world were on him before tipoff against Dallas, and Wembanyama knew it. “It doesn’t change anything for me,” Wembanyama said.
NBA League Pass viewership in Wembanyama’s home country of France, meanwhile, was only up 220% over last season’s average, according to the league. All this despite Wembanyama spending much of his first regular-season NBA game tethered to the bench in foul trouble. Popovich has been impressed with the way the 19-year-old Wembanyama has seemed to shrug off the added attention so far. “He’s been through this before,” Popovich said.
