Scientists from NTU, Singapore, have developed X-ray-activated compounds that can precisely locate and kill cancer cells in the brain.
Cancer is one of the most significant diseases, with the National Cancer Institute projecting that two million people in the US will be diagnosed with cancer in 2024.Various imaging techniques and treatment options exist, each with differing levels of effectiveness, but they are not sufficient. Alongside traditional treatments like chemotherapy, scientists are continually exploring new methods to treat different types of cancer.
To check the nature of the tumor, doctors perform a biopsy, in which a small tissue sample is removed and examined under a microscope.and its location. Surgeries can be performed to remove the tumors, radiation therapy can kill cancer cells, and newer targeted therapies are being developed to attack cancer cells and boost the body’s immune response against them.. It can be used alone or in combination with one of the other treatment options to destroy cancer cells.
This method is great for pinpointing the location of the cancer but is limited because the light used cannot penetrate very deep into tissue, making deep-seated tumors hard to detect. Additionally, these heavy metals in the anti-cancer compounds are very efficient and can increase a patient’s exposure to X-rays, which can cause side effects.The researchers wanted to use an organic compound to overcome some of the challenges that inorganic compounds face. However, they faced a daunting challenge—organic compounds do not work well with X-rays.
For the in-vivo tests, the MRAPs were used in mice with glioblastoma inside the cranium or skull. The researchers noted that the MRAPs inhibited tumor growth and provided strong imaging signals for visualizing the tumors.in the mice stopped growing, and these mice survived twice as long as untreated mice – 76 days compared with 37.”
