U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will return to China next week for more bilateral trade talks, a Trump administration official said Tuesday, as the two sides push for a deal in coming weeks.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Tuesday that the two senior officials were expected to travel to Beijing next week for more talks. The paper also reported that China's lead negotiator, Vice Premier Liu He, could be back in Washington the following week to continue the negotiations.the Senate Finance Committee that he believed the talks would reach a make-or-break point within the next few weeks.
“We’re either going to have a good result or we’re going to have a bad result before too long, but I’m not setting a specific time frame,” Lighthizer said. “And it’s not up to me. The president will tell me when the time is up, or the Chinese will.” President Donald Trump gave a brief, but upbeat, assessment of the China negotiations near the end of a joint news conference Tuesday with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
