Blood donations are at a critical low for Lifesouth Community Blood Centers.
this past weekend, hospitals need blood donations to help survivors. LifeSouth says in these dire cases, O-negative blood is given to patients since it is the universal donor.“Right now with our O negative and O positive, we are looking at maybe a one-day supply, so we’re going day to day with our blood drives trying to get those needed products in there,” said LifeSouth district community development coordinator Melinda Hinds.
In response to the mass shooting in Birmingham, she says hospitals need this type of blood because they cannot be sure of the patients’ blood types in time to get them the transfusions they need, so, they use the universal donor. “When things like that happen, our hospitals have to be ready. And the inventory in those blood types has got to be available. It has to be already tested and ready to go for that patient or it will not save their life,” Hinds said.
