The DA in KZN calls for tighter collaborative efforts to curb the number of reported abandoned newborns. ECRNewsWatch KZN
The party's call follows the discovery of a newborn baby which lost its precious life after being abandoned in a pit toilet in the Sacca informal settlement area of Pietermaritzburg.
The incident comes just after Friday's DA leadership oversight visit in the Bester area of KwaMashu over the unsafe pit toilets there. "It begs the question of why this is becoming so prevalent when there are options available to women who cannot keep their babies,” said a spokesperson for Social Development for the DA in KZN, Mmabatho Tembe.“We call on the MEC of Social Development to look at on-the-ground research on this matter for more interventions that will work in the communities and to closely work with NGOs of drop-off safe centres on how to better equip them on the communities on the ground.
Tembe will on Wednesday, alongside DA KZN Leader Francois Rodgers and Umsunduzi councillors, among others be visiting the Sacca informal settlement where they'll also engage with residents there around various plights including incidents of pit toilets there, education and unintended pregnancies, especially among young girls.
