Extremely poor visibility could make travel dangerous or life-threatening, forecasters said.
Forecasters said a dangerous snow squall moving up to 50 mph was located at 11:58 a.m. from Central to Kreamer Snyder County; to near Blacklog to Everett to Berlin, Somerset County. The squall could move further into the south central Pennsylvania region early Saturday afternoon, according to the NWS.
Forecasters said travel could be life-threatening in the area of Interstate 70 from mile markers 147 to 170, as well as the Pennsylvania Turnpike between mile markers 151 and 184, and 187 to 230. Hazardous travel is also possible on Interstate 81 between mile markers 1 and 59, 61 and 64, and 106 to 139, according to the NWS.“Consider avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes your location. If you must travel, use extra caution and allow extra time. Rapid changes in visibility and slick road conditions may lead to accidents,” the NWS said in the warning.
“There is no safe place on a highway when a snow squall hits. Visibility and traction are immediately lost in whiteout conditions, making it difficult or impossible to slow down and avoid stopped vehicles. Delay travel or safely exit the highway before the snow squall arrives.” A snow squall warning is in effect until 1:15 PM EST for I-80, US-11 near Bloomsburg--Berwick, PA; I-81, US-11, US-30 near Chambersburg, PA; I-70, US-30 near Everett, PA and I-70 near Bedford, PA.
