Taha Mandviwala, star of 'Life of Pi', returns to Cleveland for the show's engagement at Playhouse Square. The actor has a special connection to the city, having previously performed there and with family residing there.
Taha Mandviwala stars as Pi in the North American touring production of 'Life of Pi,' coming to the Connor Palace in Playhouse Square Jan. 7-26, 2025. The city holds a special place in his heart, a connection that began in 2019 when he starred in two productions, “Taming of the Shrew” and “Witness for the Prosecution.” Cleveland is also home to his brother, a doctor at University Hospitals, and one of his favorite restaurants. “I love Barrio,” Mandviwala said, calling in from Washington, D.C.
, the second stop on the show’s inaugural North American tour. “I have fond memories of finishing a show and then grabbing some tacos.” He was set to appear in a third GLT show, “Much Ado About Nothing,” in March 2020 when the pandemic shut it down. “Coming back feels like an interesting, full-circle moment where I get to reclaim performing in Cleveland after COVID,” Mandviwala said. The production features Mandviwala in the title role as Pi Patel, a teenage boy stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and a Royal Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The story has enchanted audiences since Yann Martel’s book was published in 2001, selling more than 12 million copies before being adapted into an Oscar-winning film by Ang Lee. “On the surface it is just a very simple story, about a young boy who is shipwrecked and just trying not to die,” said Mandviwala, who performed in the ensemble and swing cast on Broadway before being taking on the lead role for the tour. “I think it resonates with everybody.” That’s because it’s more than a survival story, the actor said.
