South African men face one of worst life expectancies globally, ranking 167th out of 193 countries.
The Men’s Foundation of South Africa has issued an urgent call to action to address toxic masculinity that continues to fuel stigma around men’s health issues in South Africa, including mental health and prostate cancer.
Despite significant public health challenges, such as HIV/Aids, Gsell says men’s low life expectancy cannot solely be attributed to disease. Equally concerning is the mental health crisis. “Every day, 21 South Africans take their own lives – 17 of them are men. This isn’t just a South African issue; it’s global. But the reality is that men in our country are more likely to suffer in silence because of the stigma attached to seeking help.”
One potential solution lies in creating informal safe spaces where men feel comfortable opening up about their challenges. Gsell says barbershops, gyms and bars could play a pivotal role in this regard.
