Signs have gone up in Lidl stores after the switch
The supermarket chain has put signs up around some of its locations telling shoppers they can no longer use cash at self-service points. The signs read: "Self-checkouts are now card only. You can still use cash at the till."
One shopper took to X - formerly Twitter - to vent about their local Lidl store going cashless on its self-serve tills. They said: "I just went into Lidl and every single self service checkout is card only. I said to the lad there this is ridiculous you don't even have one that is cash, they're slowly phasing cash out completely."
It comes as more and more supermarket chains opt for card only. Recently, Tesco announced that it would be going cashless at cafes in 40 UK sites. Asda also recently made 267 of its petrol stations cashless. Asda said it made the move as more than 90% of all payments at superstore fuel station forecourts were through a card or a contactless device. However, the majority of supermarket chains including Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Co-Op still continue to take cash.
