A newly formed crime reduction unit in Licking County, Ohio, has been active for six weeks, focusing on patrols, OVI enforcement, and retail theft surveillance. The unit has made several arrests, including that of a convicted sex offender. The initiative was launched in response to an increase in reported crimes, including thefts and vehicle-related offenses.
A new three-member crime reduction unit created by the Licking County Sheriff’s Office has been hitting the streets for the past six weeks, focusing on patrols, OVI enforcement and retail theft surveillance as part of an effort to keep neighborhoods safe.
“Thefts, vehicle thefts, burglaries, ID thefts, drugs,” Licking County Sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Hufford said. “Every week we are putting people in jail. That’s the ultimate goal.” Members of the unit said at least six suspects have been arrested since the team went into action last month. Friday morning, the unit took convicted sex offender 59-year-old John Cortez into custody at a Buckeye Lake home on allegations he failed to register his address with authorities. Hufford said Cortez “has a history, of sex crimes and weapons violations.” Cortez is a former Buckeye Lake councilman who was paroled last year after being sentenced in 2009 to serve 17 years for 25 counts, including multiple charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, as well as drug and weapons charges. Cortez is listed on Ohio’s sex offender registry.As he was being taken to jail, Cortez denied wrongdoing.“They said they sent them to you,” ABC 6 replied.Hufford told ABC 6 the unit was established as Licking County sees an increase in crime being reported. “We have a problem in Licking County with a lot of thefts, retail thefts," he said.
