Libyan army seizes a mine and explosives depot used by war-lord Haftar's militia, one day after it liberated the strategic city of Tarhuna
Fighters loyal to Libya's UN-recognised Government of National Accord pose for a picture in the back of a technical in the town of Tarhouna, about 65 kilometres southeast of the capital Tripoli, after the area was taken over by pro-GNA forces following clashes with rival forces loyal to strongman Khalifa Haftar. June 5, 2020.
At least 10 members of Haftar’s militia were neutralised in airstrikes by the army, according to an official. The United Nations has started holding talks with both sides for a ceasefire deal in recent days, though previous truces have not stuck. The GNA gains could entrench the de facto partition of Libya into zones controlled by rival eastern and western governments whose foreign backers compete for regional sway.
But the GNA forces' spokesman appeared to pour cold water on the Egyptian proposals, which included a demand that militias disband and hand over their weaponry to Haftar's men.
