Will there ever be a generation of LGBTQ+ people allowed to grow up in peace, experiencing the same love and support as the boys who meet girls?
Perhaps it’s a hopeful sign of the times that there is such an outpouring of love and support for the shooting’s survivors, all of us LGBTQ+ folks, and those who love us.
I drive a pick-up truck, own a big ol’ hound dog and enjoy country music. I love to camp. You may be amused to learn that this makes me fit a certain lesbian stereotype. That’s OK. We began dating in 1988, and in 1995, we moved to Harrisburg so that I could organize disability advocacy groups for a now-defunct nonprofit. By the time Pennsylvania legalized our marriage in 2014, our daughter was married to an Army sergeant, and we were raising two of my nephews. Now, we’re about to be empty nesters again, and hopefully, that nest will be vacant for a while because we’ve got things to do, like master French on Duolingo and travel. And maybe finally renovate our bathroom.
I’m into inclusion and diversity and liberty and justice for all, and the pursuit of happiness; and this idea that if we’re not all free, then none of us are truly free.
