LGBTQ+ Advisory Board nearly got a unanimous vote of approval, but Councilman Marc Whyte pushed back over bureaucracy concerns
City Council overwhelmingly approved the creation of an LGBTQ+ advisory board on Thursday, making permanent a previously ad hoc committee that could have dissolved when Mayor Ron Nirenberg leaves office next year. Only one member did not vote in favor of the board’s creation: District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte, the most conservative member on the dais.
District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur said commission vacancies are the fault of council members who have not filled them, not members of the LGBTQ+ community who want a permanent advisory board. She said people from her district have reached out, wanting to be on the LGBTQ+ panel. District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, the first openly gay man elected to City Council, said it was hard not to take Whyte's stance personally, adding that the arguments he made were 'misguided.
