Equality Utah endorsed North Logan Republican Rep. Mike Petersen’s substitute bill, thanking Petersen for being willing to find a compromise position.

now prohibits therapists and counselors from attempting to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a minor.from North Logan Republican Rep. Mike Petersen weakened that prohibition narrowing the definition of conversion therapy, and exempting written or verbal communication from the ban.

Petersen announced in a press release on Monday that following negotiations with LGBTQ stakeholders, he is making changes to the bill. “As a former counselor, the current DOPL rule has been particularly concerning to me. I have spoken with former colleagues who stopped treating minors because of ambiguity in the DOPL rule and fear of reprisal if they were to say something non-affirming to their minor patients,” Petersen said in a news release.

Equality Utah endorsed Petersen’s substitute bill, thanking Petersen for being willing to find a compromise position. “We’ve had important dialogue and have shared our concerns openly,” the organization said in a statement. “The 2nd sub continues to prohibit the very dangerous practice of conversion therapy for minors while providing greater clarification for Utah therapists, and accordingly, we support the advancement of HB228 as amended.”This story is breaking and will be updated throughout the day.
