As part of his new efforts to work 'with' the Man of Steel, Lex Luthor has officially handed his company over to Superman... without telling him. Now Superman has to deal with the major consequences of owning 'Supercorp.'
Warning: SPOILERS for Superman #1With a single "gift" to Superman, Lex Luthor has changed the city of Metropolis forever. Lex has officially—and legally—handed his company over to Superman, and now Superman has to deal with the major consequences.
Lex Luthor presents this truly massive "gift" to Superman in the most ostentatious way possible in Superman #1 by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell, and Ariana Maher. Though Lex is currently imprisoned, Superman believes the Lexcorp building is under attack from nano-technology. To his surprise, it's not an attack: it's a redecorating. The iconic Lexcorp L has been changed into a gleaming S-Shield.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Mercy Graves, Lex's crony and the new Chief Operating Officer of the company, confronts Superman to tell him the happy news: Lex has handed over all legal control of his company, now named "Supercorp," to Superman. Superman, of course, wants nothing to do with this clear trap and tries to re-gift the company to the workers themselves.
And nothing is more classically "basic" than the conflict between Superman and corrupt businessman Lex Luthor. The new creative team manages to completely upend that conflict, however, by turning over Lex's business to Superman himself, giving Clark the kind of power normally reserved for Lex. And it's that power that will keep Superman in Lex's pocket, despite Clark clearly knowing that this is all a trap.
Superman Is Trapped by His Own Good Intentions It goes to show just how perfect of an archenemy Luthor is for Superman: Lex knows that it isn't the temptation of power that will trap Superman, but rather the risk of failing and hurting others. The new existence of Supercorp could radically change the way Superman operates in Metropolis, but only because Superman himself is too kind to risk so many jobs.
