The Lewiston mass shooting victims’ families and survivors are seeking damages from the U.S. government for wrongful death, injuries and emotional distress.

Survivors and family members of victims of the Lewiston mass shooting held a news conference after filing a lawsuit against the US government on Sept. 3, 2025. The Lewiston mass shooting victims’ families and survivors are seeking damages from the U.

S. government for wrongful death, injuries and emotional distress. The allegations and evidence outlined in the civil complaint are what they hope forces the federal government's hand. Many of the details in the lawsuit are not necessarily new but do paint the clearest picture yet of the alleged failures the victims and their families believe led to the tragedy nearly two years ago.Details from the shooter's confidential medical records were also referenced. The attorneys for the victims, who are from both local and national law firms, say they've been successful in trials against federal agencies in the past after mass shootings and want to see not only justice, but systemic change."We hope that one of those effects will be to ensure that the Army and all the military departments understand what their obligations are, and not just understand it, but really the most important part is following through on those obligations,” Jamal Alsaffar of National Trial Law said. “We were able to do that in that other case, and we hope we'll be able to do that here, too." Last year, the Army said it had disciplined three reserve members over their handling of the situation, but it hasn't said much more about what other changes have been implemented. When CBS13 reached out to the Department of Defense and the Army Wednesday about this new lawsuit, we were told they don't comment on pending litigation. In a statement he says, "I support the families in their pursuit of accountability that this lawsuit represents. Lewiston stands with the survivors and families as they seek both justice and lasting reforms to ensure no community endures such loss again."
