Readers are inspired by the late Paul Layne’s longtime dedication to SMU; admire comics strip creator Tom Batiuk for his handling of social issues; and appreciate Sen. Cornyn’s help in getting a passport renewed.
This is the perfect spot to cheer for Paul Layne, who, for those of you who don’t know him, missed his first Southern Methodist University game — home, away, pandemic-era, etc. — since 1972 on Sept. 3. That streak was 542 straight games. Now that’s a fan! Layne was the ultimate cheerleader for SMU. From the team wearing helmet stickers to honor him to the local news and even ESPN College Gameday, all cheered for Layne. Even though he missed SMU’s victory over the University of North Texas, he was there in posters, ribbons, stickers, pins and our thoughts and cheers!
This reality-based comic strip, begun in 1972, depicts contemporary social issues in thoughtful and sensitive ways. During the 50 years of its existence, such topics as teen pregnancy, alcoholism, guns in classrooms, racial discrimination, teen-dating abuse, PTSD, breast cancer and gender bias, among other subjects, have been introduced.
