Letters to the Editor

Readers appreciate Rep. Wilson’s service and agree with his column; praise how their jury duty was handled; and thank two strangers for their kindness.— Re: “PAC’s meeting with neo-Nazi is a betrayal — Defend Texas Liberty helps elect Republicans, who must address this travesty,” by State Rep. Terry M. Wilson, R-Marble Falls, Monday Opinion.

I read Wilson’s op-ed and all I can say is “Bravo!” During World War II, I had two cousins on my mother’s side who served and fought against the Nazis. One, Lt. Macon Alston Gunter, Air Force, paid the true last ounce of courage when his B-25 Mitchell was attacked by the Luftwaffe over Sicily on July 4,1943, and he was killed in action. The other, Pvt. Frank W. Mitchell, was a dogface soldier in the 80th infantry division and was severely wounded in northern France in December 1944.

I think we were all impressed by Judge Chika Anyiam and how much time she invested in educating us about the law and our role within it, the humanity she showed to everyone in her courtroom and the confidence we all felt in her capable presence. I think in the end most of us jurors felt a sense of duty and even felt honored to be part of making our justice system work. We know from recent articles that very few citizens called for jury duty actually show up. And for many, the financial hardship is just too great. But if you’re called and actually able to serve, you may find it more rewarding than you expected.— I would like to thank Lydia and Dave for their excellent help after I fell in a local grocery store parking lot.
