— Re: “Basking in baseball’s spirituality — Love of the game began with a transistor radio late at night,” by Robert Darden, June 10 Opinion.I thank Mr. Darden for taking me down memory lane with many laughs. In 1952, my family bought a house two blocks from the Durham Bulls’ stadium. My dad took me to some games, but I really had fun with my friends when I got older because we watched many games from holes in the outfield fence.
When I married an Episcopal priest in 1973, I soon learned he was a baseball fanatic and had tried out for the Cardinals before going to seminary. During the first Major League Baseball game we attended in Washington, D. C., Jay saw that I had little or no interest, but he had a plan to encourage and explain all I needed to know. He went to a sports store and bought a spiral score notebook so I could keep balls, strikes, etc., and be busy throughout the game.
The plan worked and we attended many games in the nine moves we made in his career. Jay passed to the larger life 15 years ago, but I still like baseball and I am sure he is looking at this Opinion page with two thumbs up. Go, Rangers!— I am so impressed with the pickup of huge amounts of tree debris by Dallas Department of Sanitation Services employees following storms earlier this month. They were out on our street several times one day making massive pickups.
The guys on the trucks are also super friendly and polite and do an awesome job of even raking up the smaller debris. It’s a huge service and so nice to get everything carted off in such a timely manner. Much appreciated.
