Letters to the Editor - Rep. Beth Van Duyne, DEI initiatives, gun ruling, taxes | Opinion

Re: “‘The House is kind of wild,’ — Several GOP reps from Texas join in heckling during Biden speech,” Thursday news story.

I hope her future behavior will reflect the standards and values of most of her district, not just a bellicose few. And I hope she is not planning to sink to the level of representatives from other states whose behavior is downright shameful. Certainly, we should incorporate principles of merit, equality, opportunity and fairness into employment considerations. However, Gov. Greg Abbott’s recent pronouncement about state hiring practices may have the effect of dividing us, rather than uniting or rewarding us appropriately and fairly. Is there irony in this being Black History Month?

Thanks to Coale for his insightful column about the 5th Circuit Court’s tragic arming of domestic abusers . Constitutions should be organizing and guiding principles for governing, not historical straitjackets. Originalism is a dead end for rational governing. We need to be clear that the Texas property tax burden does not just affect homeowners. High property taxes reduce investment, depress worker pay, increase consumer prices and push rents higher for apartment dwellers. It’s a cascading effect.
