Letters to the Editor — Readers discuss teachers, vouchers and education in general | Opinion
Re: “Teacher pay could test legislators — Proposal could bring salary conversation to the front of the classroom,” Tuesday Metro & Business story.
As John C. Maxwell said, “Those who want power probably shouldn’t have it.” Let’s give power to those who just want to teach their students, who chose to join a profession commonly regarded as unglamorous and underpaid and never sought out the spotlight. After 36 years in a Dallas ISD classroom, my wife retired nine years ago and hasn’t seen an increase in her retirement benefit since then. How about earmarking some of that $188.2 billion available for the next budget to retired teachers?Re: “School choice boosted — Abbott: Savings accounts give parents more options,” Feb. 2 Metro & Business story.
What the governor seems to want to do is take money from the Texas public school system that needs bolstering after enduring the stress of the pandemic. Money is needed for salaries and benefits to attract good teachers, for school building improvements like air filtration systems and for internet access for all students.
More importantly is the false notion that if you’re unhappy with your schools, a voucher will give you the freedom to choose another one. Private and parochial schools’ tuition is generally higher than the per-student costs for public schools. What can that voucher buy if your family budget is already stretched to its limit?
Except for those parents who are teachers, why does Abbott think parents know better than teachers trained in education? Show teachers the respect they are due.Why should the American taxpayer pay for the private school tuition of some students?Let’s pay our teachers more and give them a much better retirement plan. I bet student education would be better then.
