Texas House Democrats and others rally against school vouchers during a press conference at Pinkston High School in Dallas on Oct 13, 2023.I admire the representatives who are trying to get Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special session for school funding. They still have hope. They understand that schools are in a lot of trouble financially, and making our system even more complex will not help.Imagine needing more school buildings, teachers and supplies and getting even less money than last year.
Both legislators and the public have defied him on school choice so he collects billions to push out those civic-minded legislators. It’s not solely about funding, but adequate financial support is crucial. Funding should be directed to schools, not to district administration, to address issues like class size, school safety and teacher and support staff compensation. More funding would attract fully certified teachers to Texas schools, fostering a supportive, stable environment for teachers and students alike.
And require that every private school or homeschooler that accepts public money has to deal with exactly the same standardized testing accountability and bureaucratic requirements as the public schools do.Let’s prioritize the heart of public education — teachers in neighborhood schools — and work together to create an environment where educators and students can thrive.I am so grateful to Gov. Greg Abbott for eliminating the diversity, equity and inclusion programs from our schools.
