Letters to the Editor

I agree with the Supreme Court minority opinion on presidential immunity. I thought the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit got the immunity ruling right. The Supreme Court majority made a political decision to favor Donald Trump. The Supreme Court considered history when considering gun law constitutionality. They didn’t look at history when considering presidential immunity. The Founding Fathers did not want a monarchy and wrote the Constitution to limit presidential powers.

The ruling protects our former presidents, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Richard Nixon had immunity on Watergate, but the court did not rule on this.Even Joe Biden, should he be defeated or withdraw from the race, will be immune from prosecution and protected by it in the future.John Huerta, Merced, Calif.

Any sitting president now can have his or her opponent killed or jailed for national security or other reasons, avoid debates and win elections without legal consequences. This applies to the current president and all future presidents. It is truly a new era in U.S. presidential politics. A very sad one. This opens up the chance that we could become a Third World dictatorship in the future. Chief Justice John Roberts and his associates should long be remembered for this one.
