In my humble opinion, there is no acceptable diplomatic solution other than defeat for Putin. I am old enough to remember the Cuban missile crisis, and fortunately, Kennedy and Khrushchev were wise enough to avert a nuclear catastrophe by having us remove our nuclear armed missiles from Turkey and the Soviets remove theirs from Cuba. You asked for a gardening column, so we bring you a gardening column: Letter from the EditorAs it happened, we had a candidate at the ready. Last year, we put out the call for people interested in writing freelance Metro columns for us, and one of the people who applied is Susan Brownstein, who discussed gardening in her application letter. When we interviewed her, she said she would like writing a Metro column but in a perfect world, she would write a gardening column. She said she would approach gardening the way our travel editor, Susan Glaser, approaches travel writing, by taking people along for the journey.
