Walsh’s explanation for our “American mess” is far more complicated. It is not just “people are flawed.” All people are flawed, but all the nations of the world do not have the flaws we have.is an analysis of the immigration that populated the country between 1560 and 1840 from an ethnic standpoint. His observations might give us a better answer.He writes there are 11 distinctive ethnic streams that shaped colonial society and continue to influence our sociopolitical life today.
So refreshing to read Cothrum’s column on Independence Day! I will make that change and begin referring to it as “Independence Day” versus the Fourth of July. It saddens me that the majority of America truly has no clue about the history and principles that make this country stand out among nations. Although higher education in Texas is still much less expensive than in many states, it has become more than what many college graduates earn in their new jobs. Texas wanted its independence so that it could continue the bondage of Blacks. The first constitution of the Republic of Texas specified that no free Black could live in Texas without the consent of Congress.
