As a student of American history, my faith in the future of our republic has been shaken. Never could I have imagined an America in which hatred and bigotry...

“In God We Trust” has been the official motto of the United States since 1956. It doesn’t define which God you choose. It simply means we try to adhere to the golden rule.

We are so much better than this! Sensible compassion, a willingness to understand differing points of view and commonsense laws such as banning military-style weapons are not out of reach. I would respectfully suggest we tune out all the divisiveness in Washington, D.C., and on social media and pull together as best we can.

Public schools in Texas cater to promising young Texans of a variety of religious faiths as well as atheists, the vast majority of whom are as morally upright and compassionate as their religious colleagues. Religion does play an important role in people’s lives, but it would be better to have parents, churches, mosques, temples and other voluntary or charitable institutions deal with that part of people’s lives.

Medicare fixes are more complex, ranging from reduced reimbursements to increased taxes on very high earners. Reimbursements are ridiculously low and high earners already pay more in Part B premiums, so a modest increase in the Medicare tax for everybody would seem fair to me.Ken Buford, GeorgetownRe: “VA launches study of Gulf War illness — For 30 years, doctor at UT Southwestern searched for causes,” May 11 Metro & Business story.
