Readers question the support for spending to build a proposed new arena in Saskatoon and the location of it downtown.
Saskatoon city council approved this downtown parking lot north of Midtown Plaza as the location for a new downtown arena. Pictures taken from the roof of the Holiday Inn on May 31, 2018.We taxpayers in Saskatoon should have the absolute right to vote to accept or reject a mega-project within the city of Saskatoon, such as the Remai Modern art gallery, the new library and a new arena.
When many people are struggling with just getting by, and not all of them are getting by, shouldn’t our council and mayor have more financial responsibility? They don’t seem to and that’s why I believe the taxpayers should have their voices heard. The downtown arena decision is a huge mistake. A couple of weeks ago, I was at a small business supper meeting at the Holiday Inn hotel.
And that is just the commuting traffic, not a crowd of maybe 12,000-plus at the arena. And what if TCU Place has an event at the same time?I have lived in Saskatoon all my 80 years and I know traffic does not flow in the downtown area. It was bad 30 years ago and it is way worse today.
