Contrary to popular myth, our society does not value competition. It tends toward monopoly in order to exclude as many as possible from joining the competitive ranks. The resulting inequality is the silent killer, as prices of basic necessities in a for-profit economy always adjust so that only those with money can afford them without financial stress, while consumption of luxury goods flourishes and investment in public goods falters.
