Temperatures have dipped well below zero the past few days, with a wind chill nearing minus-35 to minus-40 degrees. And during this time when people are home, cooking and baking, entertaining and celebrating, that is when Nicor Gas’ most important work begins.Our customers deserve the peace of mind that we’ll be there to keep their homes warm, businesses running and families safe, at a cost they can afford.
During my time in CPD as a police officer. I can count on one hand how many times I interacted with a commander and above. Not once in my 25 years did one commander ever tell me how I was doing. I commanded in the Army, and it was instilled in us from the time we became leaders to ask our soldiers how their day was, how their families were doing. We could recite every one of our soldiers’ kids’ names.
But we can’t solve this problem with relationships alone. If we don’t invest in public safety initiatives that include better tools and technology for law enforcement, our neighborhoods will continue being riddled with crime and violence. Tools such as cameras, gunshot detection systems and the use of helicopters must figure into the city’s strategy.
Like any other illness that is left untreated, behavioral and mental health can spiral out of control, costing society far more in crisis intervention than if problems were addressed early on. As a local government agency, we know the struggles of our community intimately and can address those needs deftly.Community mental health care is not just psychiatrists and group therapy, though. We know that housing, transportation, domestic relationships, education and law enforcement are all connected.
